Thumbprint Signature seeks to halt the mounting problem of check fraud being perpetrated against South Carolina Banks and their customers. The goal of the program is to create a line of defense against those contemplating check fraud. For those not deterred, law enforcement agencies will have a fingerprint to pursue persons responsible for the fraudulent activity. The procedure is simple and not burdensome. Non-account holders will be requested to apply their right thumb to an inkless fingerprinting device that leaves no ink stains or residue. The Thumbprint Signature will be placed on the face of the check between the memo line and the signature line. The SCBA is one of over 20 state associations assisting their member banks to fight fraud by participating in this program.
